Step 2: The three sections of the Speaking test

Introduction

Welcome to Step 2!

In Step 1 we looked at an overview of the IELTS Speaking test and its assessment criteria. In Step 2 we will focus on how to answer questions in the three different parts of the Speaking test.

Outcomes

At the end of Step 2 you will be able to:

  • identify the three parts of the IELTS Speaking test
  • understand the purpose of each part
  • understand the requirements of different questions
  • brainstorm appropriate and effective ideas for speaking in the test
  • practise giving effective answers for the Speaking test.

The IELTS Speaking test has three parts:

  • Part 1 Introduction and interview
  • Part 2 Individual long turn
  • Part 3 Two-way discussion.

Each part is designed to fulfil a particular purpose and is different in terms of the type of questions asked and the type of communication patterns required between the candidate and the examiner. Let’s look at each of these parts of the Speaking test in turn.
